Play Audio Virtuoso guitarist, percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Celso Machado transports his audiences through the richness and diversity of Brazilian music and beyond. The regional music of Brazil has arisen out of various blends of African, Portuguese and Indigenous influences. While Celso's music is rooted in the percussive rhythms, harmonies and spirit of Brazil, it also reflects his incurable fascination with other world music traditions. He has gained mastery of a vast array of instruments including: the Arab nay, the southern Italian tamburello, Moroccan guembri, and most recently the African kora. These influences blend seamlessly into his own sound; his own unique contribution to the evolution of Brazilian music. For over thirty years he has performed on concert stages throughout Brazil, Western Europe and Canada, as well as in the United States. He is active as a teacher, composer and recording artist.

He was born into a poor but musically rich family with six brothers (who are also great musicians). There is a saying in Brazil that samba begins with the feet. In Celso's family that soon spread to bodies, mouths, tables, boxes, frying pans and pieces of paper with each brother and their mother imitating an instrument: surdo, bass drum, shakers, agog?lls and tambourine. Although five of the six Machado brothers now each have their own independent careers as professional musicians they still love to get together to perform. Guitarist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Filo, guitarist and vocalist Carlinhos and percussionist Gera, have toured with Celso throughout Brazil, Western Europe and Canada.

Here is a treat for you compliments of CBC and Celso.  Celso explains and demonstrates a body percussion game he used to play with his brothers when they were children to amuse themselves and anyone who had the fortune to be present. Whoever missed a beat was out of the game.

He also gives us a little insight into Baião,Samba, and Bossa Nova. Nice guitar playing. Have fun listening.

Varal Celso has a facination with ethnic instruments. Whether it is a SINTIR from Morocco, a TAMBURELLO from Italy, a KORA from West Africa or a DIDGERIDOO from Australia, he studies the instruments, listens to musicians who are masters at them, and manages to not only play brilliantly anything he puts his hands on, but infuses its sounds into his ever expanding repetoire of fusion with Brazilian music and percussion.

He comes from a culture that is rich with the influences of Spain, Portugal, Africa and Indigenous Peoples. Endlessly drawing on this immense richness, Celso is able to compose and play intoxicating depth in this music, master it, record it and supply you with great listening and interesting text. The text, descriptions and glossary of music and instrumentation is a wealth of its own. A must buy, don't miss this work of world music.
